Larks and owls and disease manifestation

Clocks are ubiquitous and allow the synchronization of biological functions at the cellular, organ and behavioral level to the immutable light and dark cycle of daily existence. The oscillation of core body temperature and the inexorable cycle of waking and sleep are familiar and obvious examples of circadian rhythms. It is less obvious than than the knowledge about how biological clocks are interwoven into virtually every aspect of physiological functioning from the cellular to organ level. These oscillations in single cells and organs are regulated by the environmental light/dark cycle and social cues which serve to link the endogenous cycles to a 24 cycle entrained to the external environment.
