Severe Anxiety Among Female Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Residents: Can Gender Discrimination Be a Cause?

The article in a recent issue of the journal by Al Atassi et  al1 on the relation of perception of personal achievement and anxiety among oral-maxillofacial surgery (OMS) residents was very interesting. The investigators sent a 20-question survey to all the OMS residents enrolled in programs affiliated with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2017. Although the response rate was low (20%), the results of the survey were important, showing that 58% of OMS residents had moderate to severe levels of anxiety; in addition, residents with severe anxiety were 91% more likely to report low levels of personal achievement than resident s with low anxiety.
