CONCLUSION: The prevalence of inherited platelet function disorders in our post-tonsillectomy bleed cohort is five-fold higher than in the general population. Platelet function analyser 100 testing when patients present with a post-tonsillectomy bleed allows management of their inherited platelet function disorder. AbstractEagle's syndrome, defined by Eagle in 1949, is characterised by morphological abnormality/ossification of the styloid process. Traditionally styloid process is approached after tonsillectomy or through an invasive external cervical approach. In the present study we propose a novel Paratonsillar approach for elongated styloid process in eagle's syndrome. The study was retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent styloid process excision through paratonsillar approach over 2  years period. The present study included 26 patients who underwent paratonsillar styloid process excision. Elon...

AbstractEpistaxis is one of the most common emergencies encountered by otorhinolaryngologist. Although anterior epistaxis is easy to manage but posterior epistaxis is usually refractory. Transnasal endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation (TESPAL) is now a well established surgical technique for the management of refractory epistaxis. Electrocauterization and clipping are the most common methods used for ligation. Coblation is an upcoming tool with promising results in endoscopic skull base surgeries and tonsillectomies but has not been explored much in TESPAL. It was a randomised observational study.50 patients of refrac...

Abstract The gold standard method of tonsillectomy is "cold steel" dissection (DT). A dissector is used to separate the tonsil and capsule from the underlying muscle layer, with diathermy / surgical ties to achieve hemostasis. It causes significant postoperative pain and risk of bleeding (return to theatre rate 1.6%). PMID: 32966706 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Windfuhr JP, Schmuker C, Günster C Abstract BACKGROUND: Tonsillectomy is a reasonable indication in the management of sore throat not responding to antibiotic treatment. This longitudinal patient-level study was conducted to estimate the impact of the German guideline for the management of tonsillitis which was published in 2015. METHODS: Data of inpatient and outpatient healthcare were retrieved from a database provided by one of the largest German health insurance companies (i.e., Allgemeine Ortskrankenkassen). Procedures for the management of chronic tonsillitis (code: J35.0) between ...

Unknown primary squamous cell carcinoma metastatic to cervical lymph nodes is a relatively rare tumor presentation, although the incidence may be increasing along with the rising incidence of human papilloma virus –mediated oropharyngeal cancers. Traditional diagnostic methods with palatine tonsillectomy and panendoscopy may identify the minority of primary tumors. The addition of a transoral lingual tonsillectomy may improve the diagnostic yield of identifying a primary tumor. Incorporation of transoral ro botic surgery may be used for diagnostic purposes to identify a primary site and also for therapeutic purposes,...
