Alternate treatment of alopecia areata with the use of calcipotriol: A prospective study in children versus adults

Introduction: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common and chronic inflammatory condition that presents as nonscarring patches of alopecia and is known to affect any hair bearing area. Mild to moderate AA is notable for its spontaneous recovery, and no treatment known to modify its course. Vitamin D receptors are expressed on the root sheath of hair follicles and reduced 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 receptor expression has been demonstrated in AA patients. Very few studies have, however, demonstrated the efficacy of topical calcipotriol in alopecia areata.
