Personal overview of otology in Africa

Africa has a population of about 1.2 billion people of whom about 40 –50% are under 18 years of age. If the World Health estimates that about 4% of the population in these countries have chronic ear disease is vaguely correct this translates into about 50 million people with perforated eardrums – probably highest amongst the Paediatric population because they are the most prone to ear disease. And nothing is being done about it!
