Obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension: The role of altered sleep architecture

I read with great interest the recently published article entitled “Relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and essential hypertension: A dose−response meta-analysis” by Xia et al. [1]. The authors found that a high apnea−hypopnea index (AHI) significantly increased the risk of essential hypertension compared with a low AHI (odds ratio = 1.77 ) and reported that the risk of essential hypertension increased by 17% for every 10-events/h increase in the AHI.
