AbstractA seven-months-old girl under treatment for pneumonia presented with generalized edema, decreased urinary output and was found to have hypertension, muco-cutaneous fungal infection and pulmonary hypertension. Investigations revealed that she had heavy proteinuria, hypertriglyceridemia, hypoalbuminemia and elevated levels of free T3 and T4 with suppression of TSH levels in the serum. A diagnosis of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) in thyrotoxic phase was made on the basis of clinical presentation and presence of anti-TPO antibodies and reduced uptake in thyroid (technetium) scintigraphy. The child responded to carbimazol...

Authors: Cao J, Gao S, Chen J, Zhu B, Min R, Wang P Abstract The present study prepared 2 types of DNA diagnostic chips based on 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and 18S-28S rDNA, and evaluated their values in the detection of pathogens in intracranial bacterial/fungal infections. A total of 14 probes of bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenza, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Neisseria meningitidis, Enterobacter spp., Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia and coagulase...

We describe another case of delirium associated with levofloxacin in an elderly patient who was hospitalized in our medical ward for pneumonia. The present case and the other cases previously reported should raise the awareness of physicians to this serious, underestimated, and underdiagnosed adverse effect of a commonly used antibiotic, levofloxacin. Abstract Pneumonia is a common cause of respiratory infection, accounting for more than 800,000 hospitalizations in the United States annually. Presenting symptoms of pneumonia are typically cough, pleuritic chest pain, fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Children and the elderly have different presenting features of pneumonia, which include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and absence of one or more of the prototypical symptoms. Knowledge of local bacterial pathogens and their antibiotic susceptibility and resistance profiles is the key for effective pharmacologic selection and treatment of pneumonia. PMI...

We aim to investigate the molecular epidemiology of HAdV infection and discover the correlations between clinical features and HAdV species in an HAdV outbreak of 2014.MethodsThis is a retrospective study, enrolling patients under 19 years of age with HAdV infection at the Natio...

CONCLUSION: The results suggest that vaccinating home care patients could potentially be cost-saving from the health care and service producer's perspectives. The uncertainty from the decision-making perspective was due to the large variation in individual costs. PMID: 30114939 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsNonshockable rhythms account for the majority of the cardiac arrests in hospitals in a lower middle income country and are associated with unfavorable outcomes. Future work should be directed to training health care personnel in recognizing early warning signs and implementing appropriate measures in a resource-scarce environment.

Authors: Chen S, Tian X Abstract Human mastadenovirus (HAdVs) can cause a broad spectrum of diseases in both children and adults, including acute respiratory infection, gastroenteritis, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. Populations susceptible to adenovirus infection include children, immunocompromised patients and military recruits. To date, seven species (A-G) including more than 79 genotypes have been characterized, of which HAdV-B3, B4, B7 and the recently reemerged types 14 and 55 often lead to severe pneumonia. The live oral enteric-coated adenovirus type 4 and 7 vaccine, which was approved for use in US militar...

Authors: Garnacho-Montero J, Barrero-García I, Gómez-Prieto MG, Martín-Loeches I Abstract INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in modern medicine, severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) continues to be a potentially deadly disease. Mortality rate reaches up to the 50% in patients requiring admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when developing septic shock. Areas covered: We aim to describe the optimal management of severe CAP including antibiotic therapy, future antimicrobial options, and non-antibiotic (so-called adjunctive) therapies. A literature search was performed to identify all clinic...
