Analytical Validation of Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) Activity in Seminal Plasma of Horses

Oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a major cause of male infertility. The sperm plasma membrane is vulnerable to oxidative stress being rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Equine spermatozoa appear relatively more resistant to membrane peroxidation than sperm of other domestic animals; however, cryopreservation increases susceptibility to lipid peroxidation [1]. The effects of oxidative stress are particularly important during sperm storage, and damage is further increased when sperm are separated from the seminal plasma, which contains much of the antioxidant capacity.
