The plasma biomarkers kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and tumor necrosis factor receptors 1 and 2 (TNFR1/2) identify patients with diabetes at increased risk for loss of kidney function. Nadkarni and colleagues measured these biomarkers in 498 individuals of African ancestry with good baseline kidney function and 2 APOL1 risk alleles to see whether they could be used to more precisely discriminate who would develop an adverse kidney outcome (end-stage kidney disease or 40% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate).
