“Schizophrenia” and “psychosis” in Italian national newspapers: Do these terms convey different messages?

Dear Editor, the diagnostic label “schizophrenia” has been found to be associated with high levels of stigma and discrimination repeatedly (Read et al., 2013). Furthermore, misrepresentations of this disorder in the media contribute to negative attitudes toward those with this diagnosis (Joseph et al., 2015; Yang and Parrott, 20 17; Dubugras et al., 2011; Magliano et al., 2011; Thys et al., 2013; Athanasopoulou and Välimäki, 2014; Rodrigues-Silva et al., 2017). Several authors have suggested the use of the term “psychosis” as an acceptable alternative to “schizophrenia” (Carpenter, 2016; in Magliano et al., 2017).
