Can Muscle Strength Be Considered a Composite Biomarker of Sarcopenia?

Changes in the age-specific prevalence and severity of functional impairment are expected to have major implications for health care costs.1 According to the Global Health and Aging report released by the World Health Organization, “the number of people aged 65 or older is projected to grow from an estimated 524 million in 2010 to nearly 1.5 billion in 2050, with most of the increase in developing countries.”2 Although aging is not synonymous with poor health or loss of independence, the risk of developing diseases and dis abilities increases with advancing age.
