Chronic Kidney Diseases in Agricultural Communities

Throughout the world, significant increases of chronic kidney diseases of non-traditional etiologies have been reported (Central American, Sri Lanka, India), associated with marked increases in mortality among those impacted. As investigation of this phenomenon has spread, almost every country that has systematically looked for these disorders has found them. In the US, a significant proportion of kidney diseases remains unaccounted for by traditional risk factors, or potentially misattributed to these factors. The question arises whether this phenomenon is occurring in the U.S. but is not currently realized. Very few current projects are devoted to this issue.
