Cancer research will accelerate meaningfully towards the goal of control of all cancer only when a majority of researchers are working on mechanisms common to large number of different cancer types. There are too many subtypes of cancer and too few scientists to make real progress when tackling cancers one by one. Shutting down metastasis is one grail of cancer research, as the majority of cancer deaths are caused when cancer spreads throughout the body, not by the initial tumor. Thus a search for common mechanisms of metastasis is one of the few presently viable approaches to the production of broader cancer therapies. Re...

Patients with oral cancer can develop complications related to the tumor, the treatment, or patient factors. Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or some combinations of these treatments are used for oral cancer, depending on the type of cancer, anatomic site, and stage. The major objectives of oral cancer therapy are complete control of the tumor with minimal complications and better quality of life for the patient. The development of acute or long-term toxicities can limit the patient's tolerance to therapy, sometimes leading to a suboptimal treatment schedule, poor patient outcome, increased hospital stays, and higher treatment costs.

In this study, the potential for SWNHs to serve as nanotheranostic vehicles is demonstrated through simultaneous delivery of the chemotherapeutic cisplatin from SWNH cone interiors and imaging of the nanoparticle transport to tumor cells using conjugated quantum dots (QDs). Following the formation of cisplatin-modified SWNH-QD (SWNH-QD + cis) hybrids, their characterization by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (STEM, TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were performed to characterize the composite nanoparticles. Drug release profiles and 50% inhibitory concent...

Publication date: Available online 20 June 2018 Source:Pharmacology & Therapeutics Author(s): Joe Pelt, Sara Busatto, Mauro Ferrari, E. Aubrey Thompson, Kabir Mody, Joy Wolfram Clinically approved cancer therapies include small molecules, antibodies, and nanoparticles. There has been major progress in the treatment of several cancer types over recent decades. However, many challenges remain for optimal use of conventional and nanoparticle-based therapies in oncology including poor drug delivery, rapid clearance, and drug resistance. The antimalarial agent chloroquine has been found to mitigate some of these challenges...

Jefferson Health's Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center is teaming up with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute in a collaboration designed to expand clinical trial offerings to patients in the Philadelphia area. Sarah Cannon, based in Nashville, developed the first community-based drug development program in the country. The organization has conducted more than 300 first-in-human studies and has been a clinical trial leader in the majority of approved cancer therapies over the last decade. Through its net work…

Background Albumin-to-Alkaline Phosphatase Ratio (ALB/ALP ratio, AAPR), a newly developed index of liver function, has been rarely discussed about its prognostic value in malignancies. The current study attempted to evaluate the prognostic prediction of AAPR in advanced HCC.Methods 237 advanced HCC patients who refused any standard anti-cancer therapies were retrospectively analyzed. The threshold value of AAPR was determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Univariate analyses using Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test, and multivariate analysis using Cox proportional hazards regression model were conduc...

In the past decades, our knowledge about the relationship between cancer and the immune system has increased considerably. Recent years' success of cancer immunotherapy including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), cancer vaccines, adoptive cancer therapy and the immune checkpoint therapy has revolutionized traditional cancer treatment. However, challenges still exist in this field. Personalized combination therapies via new techniques will be the next promising strategies for the future cancer treatment direction.
