Authors: Kaul G, Kapoor E, Dasgupta A, Chopra S Abstract Delafloxacin meglumine (Baxdela, WQ-3034, ABT-492, RX-3341; Melinta Therapeutics) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2017 for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections on the basis of data from two phase III trials. Delafloxacin is a broad-spectrum anionic fluoroquinolone and its distinct chemical structure increases its potency in acidic environments. It is known to inhibit DNA replication and repair by targeting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Delafloxacin is administered via both oral and parenter...

In this study, we evaluated the link between the serological response to two different A. suum antigen preparations and respiratory or meat inspection outcomes. Two different serological tests were used that measure antibodies against either the A. suum haemoglobin molecule or complete homogenate of the 3rd stage larva that migrate through the lungs. Firstly, serum samples were analysed that were collected from 19 herds in which the cause of acute clinical respiratory symptoms was either Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, A. suum, or a miscellaneous cause. This was done to test whether serological results could confirm patho...

Abstract Influenza activity in the United States was low during October 2018, and, although it increased slowly during November, activity remains low across most of the country.* During the week ending December 1, 2018, the percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness† (ILI) was equal to the national baseline§ (Figure) and was at or slightly above the region-specific baseline in four of the 10 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regions¶ (Regions 4 and 7-9). The majority of jurisdictions experienced minimal or low ILI activity since September 30; however, two experienced mod...

We describe the case of a 75-year-old patient with late-onset schizophrenia who used clozapine. During a hospital admission due to pneumonia, she developed a form of acute dystonia consisting of a rotational torticollis, which disappeared rapidly after treatment with biperiden. Blood examination showed an increase of the clozapine level, probably due to the infection. This case report shows that acute dystonia, although very rare, can occur during treatment with clozapine; therefore awareness is needed of the circumstances that can alter clozapine levels. Authors: Benton AH, Marquart ME Abstract Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic pathogen that can cause severe infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, septicemia, and middle ear infections. It is also one of the top pathogens contributing to bacterial keratitis and conjunctivitis. Though two pneumococcal vaccines exist for the prevention of nonocular diseases, they do little to fully prevent ocular infections. This pathogen has several virulence factors that wreak havoc on the conjunctiva, cornea, and intraocular system. Polysaccharide capsule aids in the evasion of host complement s...
