Regulation of gene expression might be the largest driving factor in normal variation in the phenotypic differences between individuals. In genome-wide association studies, for example, SNPs associated with an array of complex traits are located in regulatory regions, supporting the idea that these variants might alter transcription factor (TF) binding and gene expression. Although there is a growing interest in variation present in these regions, it remains unclear how regulatory regions evolved and acquired their function.
