Stent-Assisted Coil Embolization of 2 Complex Juxtarenal Penetrating Aortic Ulcers: An Unconventional Solution
Penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU) is 1 of 3 entities frequently summarized as acute aortic syndrome. The lesions, based on severe arteriosclerosis of the aorta, occur by penetration through the internal lamina and lead to hematoma formation within the media (1). Of acute aortic syndromes, 2% –7% are caused by PAUs (2). Especially in symptomatic patients, PAUs are associated with a substantial risk of rupture, which is 40% in the literature (3). Open surgical repair and stent graft implantation are established treatment options.
