Varian Medical opens new Brazilian manufacturing, training facilities

Varian Medical (NYSE:VAR) said today it opened a new regional facility in Jundiai, Brazil. The newly opened 50,600-square foot facilities include manufacturing and warehousing areas, a demonstration room and two training rooms featuring the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company’s Varian Trilogy linear accelerator platform. “We are excited that this facility is now open and demonstrates our long-standing commitment and partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Health in the fight against cancer and increase the access to advanced radiotherapy treatment in the country and across Latin America. In the first year, we estimate that we will train up to 300 clinicians and therapists on the use of radiotherapy equipment, treatment plans and techniques,” Varian Brazil managing director Humberto Izidoro said in a press release. Varian said it plans to begin use of the manufacturing and warehousing areas by next year, and that it has already begun to hold classes in the facilities. Last week, Varian said it won Shonin approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for its Halcyon image-guided volumetric intensity modulated radiotherapy cancer treatment system.
