This study attempted to see the role of MIAT in a cell model of osteoarthritis (OA). ATDC5 cells were subjected to lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to mimic a cell model of OA. The effects of MIAT on the model were tested by performing CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry, qRT-PCR, western blot and ELISA. The downstream miRNA and signalling pathways were studied by utilizing qRT-PCR and western blot. Transfection of ATDC5 cells with the shRNA specific against MIAT significantly attenuated LPS-evoked apoptosis and cytokines release. At the meantime, the viability loss and the cleavage of caspases were ameliorated as well. MIAT overexpresse...

Americans consume the equivalent of 300 loaves of bread each year (representing enormous exposure to the amylopectin A carbohydrate that behaves like sugar or worse). They also consume 200 pounds of sugar. It is not uncommon for sugar alone to comprise a quarter of all calories taken in over the course of the day—some of it out in the open, some of it hidden. To understand the adverse effects of sugars—sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, and other fructose-rich sweeteners, such as agave, honey, and maple syrup—we need to understand two phenomena: 1. Insulin resistance 2 Glycation. Insulin Resistanc...

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and trigger digits (TD) are often coexist, and they share many risk factors including diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis 1.In addition, carpal tunnel release (CTR) can also be associated with TD. Specifically, CTR increases the entrance angle of the flexor tendons to the A1 pulleys 2. This angle increase may cause additional friction between flexor tendons and the A1 pulley, which results in TD 3. When considering treatment for CTS, patients often ask about typical postoperative course and complications.

Conclusions: Authors conclude that a large-scale study is feasible and dependent on: (1) increasing sample size to account for the high attrition rate; (2) liberalizing inclusion criteria to include patients with carpal tunnel syndrome; (3) allotting more time at follow-up visits to ensure completion of all measurements; and (4) increasing staff involvement (ie, develop rapport with patients and maintain stability with research assistants).

The WHO reports that one of the major chronic conditions affecting the elderly worldwide is musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with long-term pain and disability. Considering the healthcare needs of the elderly (i.e. comprehensive, accessible, efficient) and the advantages of ultrasound (US) use (patient-friendly, convenient, cost-effective, and does not require exposure to radiation or magnetic fields), there seems to be a ‘gap’ in the actual clinical practice. In this paper, we aimed to highlight the potential value of US imaging in the management of the elderly with a wide spectrum of musculoskele...

Semin Musculoskelet Radiol 2016; 20: 401-408 DOI: 10.1055/s-0036-1594286Corticosteroids are routinely injected into soft tissues, tendon sheaths, bursae, and joints. These anti-inflammatory agents have different potency and solubility, and solubility is inversely correlated with the duration of action. Corticosteroids carry a low risk of complications but commonly cause systemic and local adverse effects. The use of intra-articular corticosteroid injections in the treatment of inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis is well established. Evidence also supports the use of injectable corticosteroids in the treatment of infl...

CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that both RA and OA increase the risk of CTS. Further prospective studies on the effect of wrist OA on CTS are needed. PMID: 27022991 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
