Lipid Levels Linked to Inflammation in Atopic Asthma
Results of a recent study into the role of lipids in atopic asthma could help identify new targets for therapy.
Asthma, hay fever and eczema are linked to an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, according to a new study in Taiwan.
A robust new study out of Taiwan has found evidence that people who suffer from allergies are more likely to develop a psychiatric
Abstract Asthma is a common and potentially life-threatening lung disease. The prevalence of asthma is higher in women than in men. This monograph provides an overview of the pathophysiology, evaluation, and management of asthma in women. Management approaches in reproductive-aged, pregnant, and postmenopausal patients are addressed. PMID: 29683908 [PubMed - in process]

AS A meteorologist and TV weather presenter Clare Nasir could rightly be considered something of an expert on the growing problem of Britain ’s air pollution. But even she admits to being taken aback at the impact that moving from crowded London to leafy Cheshire had on the health of her eight-year-old daughter Sienna.
Abstract Background: Despite significant advances in understanding the pathophysiology and management of asthma, some of systemic effects of asthma are still not well defined. Objectives: To compare heart function, baseline physical activity level, and functional exercise capacity in young patients with mild-to-moderate asthma and healthy controls. Methods: Eighteen healthy (12.67 ± 0.39 years) and 20 asthmatics (12.0 ± 0.38 years) patients were enrolled in the study. Echocardiography parameters were evaluated using conventional and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). Results: Although pulmonary acceleration time (...
Ralf Moos The cytokine interleukin-13 (IL-13) plays a major role in airway inflammation and is a target of new anti-asthmatic drugs. Hence, IL-13 determination could be interesting in assessing therapy success. Thus, in this work an electrochemical immunosensor for IL-13 was developed and integrated into a fluidic system with temperature control for read-out. Therefore, two sets of results are presented. First, the sensor was set up in sandwich format on single-walled carbon nanotube electrodes and was read out by applying the hydrogen peroxide–hydroquinone–horseradish peroxidase (HRP) system. Second, a ...
Stratification of patients with severe asthma by blood eosinophil counts predicts responders to anti-interleukin (IL)-5 (mepolizumab and reslizumab) and anti-IL-5 receptor α (benralizumab) therapies. This stud...
In patients with eczema that is difficult to manage, it is important to consider the possibility that they are allergic to the topical medications or emollients being used to manage their skin disease. This group of patients may have allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to topical corticosteroids (TCS), antibiotics, or the excipients and preservatives used in their topical medications or emollients being used for skin care. For this group of patients, topical corticosteroids or the excipients in their vehicle may actually worsen their underlying disease and are the focus of this article.
