In this study, we performed immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. The results show that RASSF6 is upregulated in ESCC and that the elevated expression level of RASSF6 is associated with lymph node metastasis and poor survival of ESCC patients. Consistent with the clinical observations, the upregulation of RASSF6 greatly promotes ESCC cell proliferation, migration and invasion as well as the cell cycle transition to G1/S phase in vitro. According to models in vivo, the downregulation of RASSF6 considerably inhibits ESCC tumor growth and lung metastasis. Mechanistically, RASSF6 negatively regulates the tumor suppressor tripartit...

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a novel class of noncoding RNAs, have recently drawn much attention in the pathogenesis of human cancers. However, the role of circRNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) re...

AbstractAimsTo explore the relationship between excision repair cross-complementing 1 (ERCC1) gene expression and clinical pathological parameters and prognosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients who received the surgical therapy.MethodsTo identify relevant articles, a systematic literature retrieval was conducted in several databases, including the Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, VIP, Wanfang, and CNKI. The association of ERCC1 gene expression with clinicopathological characteristics and survival was assessed by the pooled relative risk (RR) and hazard ratio (HR) with the corresponding...

Jung-Hyun Shim Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a poor prognostic cancer with a low five-year survival rate. Echinatin (Ech) is a retrochalone from licorice. It has been used as a herbal medicine due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. However, its anticancer activity or underlying mechanism has not been elucidated yet. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the anti-tumor activity of Ech on ESCC by inducing ROS and ER stress dependent apoptosis. Ech inhibited ESCC cell growth in anchorage-dependent and independent analysis. Treatment with Ech induced G2/M phase of cell cyc...

In this study, we confirmed the inhibition of proliferation by CGA in ESCC cells, as well as the reduction of ESCC xenograft volume by CGA in vivo. In addition, CGA also suppressed both the migration and invasion of ESCC cells in vitro. In a carcinogen-induced murine model of ESCC, hyperplasia of the esophagus was slowed by CGA, while mice suffering from ESCC that were treated with CGA had longer survival times than mice in the control group. The measurement of pluripotency factors (BMI1, SOX2, OCT4 and Nanog) that are related to poor prognosis revealed reduced expression of both BMI1 and SOX2, but not of OCT4 or Nanog, in...

Authors: Chen SG, Wang CH, He RQ, Xu RY, Ji CB Abstract OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression level of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) CASC11 in esophageal carcinoma (ECa), and to further explore its relationship with clinical progression, pathological parameters, and prognosis of ECa patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to examine the level of lncRNA CASC11 in 45 pairs of ECa tissues and adjacent normal tissues. The relationship between the lncRNA CASC11 level and clinical progression, pathological parameters, and prognosi...

Authors: Guha M, Srinivasan S, Sheehan MM, Kijima T, Ruthel G, Whelan K, Tanaka K, Klein-Szanto A, Chandramouleeswaran PM, Nakagawa H, Avadhani NG Abstract Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is an aggressive cancer with late-stage detection and poor prognosis. This emphasizes the need to identify new markers for early diagnosis and treatment. Altered mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) content in primary tumors correlates with poor patient prognosis. Here we used three-dimensional (3D) organoids of esophageal epithelial cells (EECs) from the MPV17-/- mouse model of mtDNA depletion to investigate the contribution of...
