[Correspondence] Laminar flow ventilation during surgery

A recent meta-analysis and systematic review by Peter Bischoff and colleagues1 suggests that laminar airflow ventilation confers no advantage in terms of the incidence of post-operative surgical site infection (SSI) when compared with the use of conventional (turbulent) ventilation. On the basis of their findings, the authors strongly recommend that laminar airflow ventilation, which is considerably more expensive than conventional ventilation, should not be installed in new operating theatres.
