Guideline for treating low bone density or osteoporosis to prevent fractures
The American College of Physicians recommends in an evidence-based clinical practice guideline that physicians treat women with osteoporosis with bisphosphonates (alendronate, risedronate, or zoledronic acid) or denosumab, a biologic agent.
INTRODUCTION: Hip fracture is considered the most serious consequence of falls and osteoporosis. 18% of women will suffer one and 25% die in the first year. Only 73% of survivors will walk as they did previously. We know little about the assistance and evo...
In this study, we aim to evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD) results of 2 standard sites with 3 sites including wrist in diagnosing osteoporosis. Methods: We evaluated the BMD results of 1272 individuals referred for suspected osteoporosis between 2012 and 2015. Those individuals were included with BMD at lumbar spine, femur neck, and wrist. Bone mineral density was measured using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) device. Bone mineral density and T score were measured for all 3 sites. Results: There was significant correlation between wrist T score with hip T score (r = 0.606, P
Osteoporosis drugs appear to help women older than 80 years with multiple morbidities and osteoporosis; very elderly women with high fracture risk but no osteoporosis may benefit less, a study found.Medscape Medical News
Update: 3/23/2011 FDA has determined an osteoporosis and fracture warning on the over-the-counter (OTC) proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication “Drug Facts” label is not indicated at this time.
ConclusionWe report that an intensive outreach osteoporosis investigation program can help increase the number of hip fracture patients being tested and treated for osteoporosis. Further, the initiation of treatment can significantly increase the T-score.
ConclusionsThe findings demonstrate the most and the least desirable types of obesity in terms of risk for both osteoporosis and MS. Public health practitioners may consider the type of obesity to reduce or prevent both conditions in postmenopausal women.
AbstractThis meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether heart failure is associated with an increased risk of fractures by summarizing all the available evidence. The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for all relevant studies published from the date of database inception to April 2018. Studies that investigated the association between heart failure and fracture risk and conducted a comparison with controls were included. Seven cohort studies were finally identified as eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. All included studies were of high quality as evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottaw...
ConclusionsKnowing the factors affecting the prescription of anti-osteoporosis medication is beneficial for strategic planning in order to increase the rate of prescription. The gap of treatment may be reduced, and the morbidity and mortality of the patients can be decreased.
There was a mistake in the part ofOVX rats model and RRP intervention in the original publication.
In conclusion, our findings suggest a possible role for BMD monitoring after initiating anti‐osteoporosis therapy in the routine clinical practice setting. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
