We present a patient with SR of an endobronchial carcinoid, followed by serial bronchoscopies and biopsy over a 24-month period.

Ezzat Several important landmark trials have reshaped the landscape of non-surgical management of small bowel neuroendocrine tumors over the last few years, with the confirmation of the antitumor effect of somatostatin analogue therapy in PROMID and CLARINET trials as well as the advent of therapies with significant potential such as mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor (mTor) everolimus (RADIANT trials) and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) with 177-Lutetium (NETTER-1 trial). This narrative summarizes the recommended management strategies of small bowel neuroendocrine tumors. We review the main eviden...

Spread through air spaces (STAS) is a hype and assumed to be another way for tumor cells to permeate lung parenchyma beyond classical invasion criteria (stroma, patterning and lymphovascular spaces) [1], which is increasingly described at the growing edges of adenocarcinoma [2,3], squamous cell carcinoma [4], sarcomatoid carcinoma [5] and neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms [6,7], with worrisome implications for tumor recurrence, reduced survival and parenchyma-sparing resections [8 –11]. STAS was officially introduced in the 2015 World Health Organization classification for adenocarcinoma [1], but aerogenous spread as a s...

Background and objective Bronchopulmonary carcinoid (BPC) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor, the clinical studies on treatment and prognostic factors of BPC are somewhat controversial. Our purpose was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of surgery on BPC, and to analyze the prognostic factors affecting the survival of BPC. Methods We retrospectively collected the clinical data of patients with BPC admitted to the Chinese PLA General Hospital between January 2000 and December 2017. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the survival rate of patients and to map the survival curve. Then the effects of different factors like...

Conclusion.SSAs, alone and in combination, are common treatments for advanced lung NETs. Patients have additional treatment options and relatively long survival compared with patients with other advanced cancers. Treatment pattern assessment following approval of newer treatments is needed.Implications for Practice.Somatostatin analogs (SSAs), cytotoxic chemotherapy, EBRT, liver‐directed therapy, and targeted therapies are common treatments for locally advanced/metastatic (typical/atypical) lung neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). SSAs alone or in combination with other treatment modalities were the most common first‐ and se...

In conclusion, the Finnish biobank infrastructure offers excellent opportunities for tissue-based res earch. However, to be able to develop the biobank operations further, involving more medical knowledge in the sample and data acquisition process is a necessity. Also, when working with tissue samples collected over decades, histological expertise is essential for re-evaluation and re-classification of the samples.

Conclusion: Lung carcinoid tumors are detected by 68Ga DOTA-NOC PET/CT with a high degree of sensitivity (91.7%) [1,2]. It also detects asymptomatic distant metastatic disease in a sizeable number of patients (11.7%) that leads to change in treatment strategy. Typical carcinoid tumors exhibit a higher degree of SSTR expression compared to atypical tumors and metastatic disease is more commonly seen with atypical carcinoid [3].

CONCLUSIONS: No literature thus far exists describing a connection between BRCA mutations and carcinoid tumors. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of carcinoid tumors are proven to have impact on survival and prognosis of these patients. PMID: 31039815 [PubMed - in process]
