Enhanced methods for duodenoscope reprocessing: answers or just more questions

Although ERCP is clearly a major technologic advancement in the management of pancreaticobiliary disorders, it has historically been associated with a risk of infection as a potential procedure-related adverse event. Conventional wisdom has ascribed the risk of infection to stents and stones in the obstructed pancreaticobiliary tree. Now, with reported outbreaks of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections in patients undergoing ERCP and duodenoscopy in medical centers around the world,1-5 attention has turned to the duodenoscope as the vector of infection.
