Lab notes: welcome to the Guardian's weekly science roundup

Welcome to the first weekly roundup of the best of the Guardian’s science coverage. And what a week it’s been. Without question, the biggest story of the week has been the news that scientists in California trying to grow human organs inside pigs have successfully created part-human, part-pig embryos. Chimeras aside, we’ve also had the shocking news that air pollution is now a major contributor to stroke worldwide, and excitement as researchers discover the fossil remains of what appear to be the ancestors of the Flores ‘hobbits’.
