[Correspondence] Borrelia mayonii: prying open Pandora's box of spirochetes – Authors' reply

We thank John Scott for his comments regarding our recent Article1 describing the identification of a novel genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Borrelia mayonii) as a new cause of Lyme borreliosis among patients in the upper midwestern USA. We agree with Scott that multiple B burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies can infect human beings. Our wording “nearly all human infections are caused by three B burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies” reflects this, and does not exclude other B burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies.
