Nigeria: States Urged to Embrace SMC for Malaria Elimination
[Daily Trust] State governments in the Sahel region and non-governmental organizations have been advised to invest in Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) to reduce the burden of malaria in those areas.
The risk is rising that the new strain could threaten sub-Saharan Africa, where most malaria cases and deaths occur.
Drug resistant parasites were first detected in Cambodia in 2008 and had spread to neighbouring countries by 2017. Experts fear the strain could reach Africa, where the disease is most fatal.
Drug-resistant malaria parasites have moved from Cambodia to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
Strains of malaria resistant to two key anti-malarial medicines are becoming more dominant in Vietnam, Laos and northern Thailand after spreading rapidly from Cambodia, scientists warned on Monday.
(The Lancet) Multidrug-resistant forms of Plasmodium falciparum parasites, the most lethal species causing human malaria, have evolved even higher levels of resistance to antimalarial drugs and spread rapidly since 2015, becoming firmly established in multiple regions of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, where they are causing alarmingly high treatment failure rates to a widely used frontline malaria drug combination.
(Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute) Genomic surveillance has revealed that malaria resistance to two first-line antimalarial drugs has spread rapidly from Cambodia to neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. Researchers discovered that descendants of one multi-drug resistant malaria strain are replacing the local parasites in Vietnam, Laos and northeastern Thailand, and are picking up additional new genetic changes which could further enhance resistance. The study in The Lancet Infectious Diseases reveals the importance of ongoing genomic surveillance in malaria control strategies.
Abstract In Colombia, the convergence of drug trafficking, illegal armed groups, and gold production and trade threatens peace and stability in the post-FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) era, as had the narcotics trade previously. Armed groups and criminal organizations have increased and consolidated their influence over illegal mining and may be diverting US$5 billion from Colombia's annual economy. As of 2014, 46% of the total area (78 939 ha) exploited for alluvial gold was in the Afro-Colombian Pacific States, in which unregulated mining was the main driver of deforestation. The info...
