ESHO 1 –85. Hyperthermia as an adjuvant to radiation therapy in the treatment of locally advanced breast carcinoma. A randomized multicenter study by the European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology
The first systematical clinical study of heat as a method to improve radiation response in tumors was reported in 1910 by M üller, who described the potential of using local diathermia as an adjuvant to radiotherapy [1,2]. However, it was not until the mid-1970′s that the concept began to be more detailed explored. This took place through numerous smaller uncontrolled studies, which strongly suggested that adjuvant hy perthermia may increase the probability of controlling tumors by radiotherapy [3–7].
