Clinically Relevant Herb-Drug Interactions: Past, Present, and Future

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) presents the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture series. The series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary health therapies, and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine. Bill Gurley, Ph.D., is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Dr. Gurley’s research interests include phytochemical-mediated modulation of human drug metabolism and transport, pharmaceutical aspects of botanical dosage forms, and assessment of dietary supplement safety and efficacy. His on-going research projects include the assessment of potential herb-drug interactions in healthy human volunteers and the pharmacokinetics of phytochemicals present in common botanical supplements. Other on-going work involves assessment of heavy metal and microbial contamination of common dietary supplements and the hemodynamic and electrocardiographic effects of ephedra-free weight-loss supplements.
