Premature Ventricular Contractions: the Incidentalomas of Cardiac Electrophysiology?

An incidentaloma generally has two characteristics. First, it is observed as an unintended consequence of ordering a medical test. Second, the subsequent steps for optimal clinical care remain poorly elucidated. Might there be such a phenomenon relevant to cardiac electrophysiology? Two original research manuscripts in this issue of Heart Rhythm remind us that premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) sometimes represent an incidentaloma and sometimes are the prespecified target of scrutiny.1,2
