Of Humans and Machines in Endoscopy: Flying Solo, Instrument Aided, or on Autopilot?

Endoscopy is a triumph of science and engineering.1,2 During a busy day of procedures, we rarely stop and marvel at our routine: we delve deep into the tortuous gastrointestinal tract, topologically “outside of our bodies” but viscerally far “inside us”; we examine the barrier between our bodies’ substance and the outside world with high definition, magnification, and enhanced lighting, and we even peer beyond it; we advance instruments to diagnose and treat conditions that afflict hu mankind with substantial morbidity and mortality.
