Autophagy Modulation in Endothelial Hyperglycemia-Induced Wound-Healing Impairment

Two studies have recently delved into the intricate signaling affecting the malfunctioning of endothelial cells in the wound-healing process of individuals with diabetes. They report on 2 alternative mechanisms of deregulated autophagy that occur because of high blood sugar levels (Wang et  al, 2024; Xu et al, 2023). Previous research has already shown a decrease in the formation of new blood vessels, known as neovascularization, due to dysfunction of endothelial cells caused by hyperglycemia (Funk et al, 2012).
