Trends in Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Search Activity and Opioid Prescribing by Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeons in Massachusetts 2016-2022

Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs), which monitor controlled substances dispensed to patients, have been implemented by states as a clinical tool to promote responsible opioid prescribing and minimize drug diversion. By 2021, all 50 states had created PDMPs, though not all states mandate their use. Massachusetts passed legislation mandating prescribers check the PDMP prior to prescribing any Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) schedule II or III opioid medications beginning in October 2016.
