Editorial comment on: “Clinical efficacy evaluation of a novel negative pressure ureteroscopic lithotripsy for ureteral stones”

There have been numerous advances in the treatment of nephrolithiasis including miniaturized instrumentation and new laser technology; however, the purpose of the procedure remains the same – to render the patient stone free. Recent publications reemphasizes the need to render patients stone free with residual fragment size contributing to stone-related events for both percutaneous nephrolithotomy1 and ureteroscopy.2 Both the vacuum assisted ureteral and percutaneous access sheaths a re now commonly used with advertised benefits of a reduction in stone retropulsion, shorter operating room times and potentially reducing procedure costs.
