Virtual reality to improve the experience of the outpatient cosmetic dermatologic patient: A prospective interventional pilot study

To the Editor: One of the most common adverse events during skin treatment with energy-based devices and dermal filler injections is pain.1,2 While current practices reduce pain, patients still experience breakthrough pain.1,3,4 Patients may also experience significant anxiety prior to or during procedures, likely related to the expectation of pain or the setting in which the procedure is performed.5 We sought to determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) as a method to improve the experience of patients undergoing outpatient dermatologic cosmetic procedures.
