Machine learning –based identification and characterization of mast cells in eosinophilic esophagitis

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a food-induced allergic inflammatory disease of the esophagus. Although rare, the prevalence of EoE is increasing with current estimates being 56 cases per 100,000 persons.1,2 Active disease is determined by upper endoscopy, and the pathologic diagnosis is defined by at least 15 eosinophils per high-power field (eos/hpf) identified on esophageal biopsies, yet recent data indicate that eosinophils are not involved in the clinical manifestations of eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, which calls attention to the potential pathogenic role of other cell populations.
