Prophecy, prediction, and prognosis  – can we improve the advice we give on the chance of pregnancy and treatment options for infertility?

Diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment are three vital components of medical care, established as a principle in ancient Hippocratic medicine. When diagnostic tools and knowledge were limited and treatment options were absent, physicians spent a lot of time on prognosis using their experience, clinical history, and observations to aid the patient in assessing their future health prospects (1). When the causes of disease became more apparent and new methods of treatment emerged, prognosis received much less attention.
