Ableist Language in NIH ’s Mission Statement—Reply

In Reply Dr Jost ’s letter recounts his individual story of spinal cord stroke as a teenager, subsequent long and productive career as a practicing physician, and self-perceptions of his disability. As we note in our article, which recounts decades of evolving views of disability, disabilities are diverse, and dif ferent disabled people have different perspectives. For example, while Dr Jost takes no pride in having a disability, other individuals are proud of their identity as disabled people.
