Editorial comment on: “Clinical Efficacy Evaluation of a Novel Negative Pressure Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy for Ureteral Stones”

There have been numerous advances in the treatment of nephrolithiasis, including miniaturized instrumentation and new laser technology; however, the purpose of the procedure remains the same —to render the patient stone free. Recent publications re-emphasizes the need to render patients stone free with residual fragment size contributing to stone-related events for both percutaneous nephrolithotomy1 and ureteroscopy.2 Both the vacuum-assisted ureteral and percutaneous access sheaths a re now commonly used with advertised benefits of a reduction in stone retropulsion, shorter operating room times, and potentially reducing procedure costs.
