Infant and Maternal Morbidity Symptoms as Predictors for the Interruption of Exclusive Breastfeeding in Lima, Peru: A Prospective Study

The beneficial effects of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) during the first 6 months of life have been widely studied (Black et al., 2008; Kim et al., 2021; Lin et al., 2023; Victora et al., 2016; Vieira et al., 2014). Globally, between 2015 and 2021, 48% of infants 0 –5 months of age were exclusively breastfed (UNICEF, 2022). The World Health Assembly in 2012 set the goal to increase EBF rates to 50% by 2025 (WHO, 2015). This global nutrition target was recently increased to at least 70% by 2030 (WHO& UNICEF, 2019).
