Duration of Atrial Fibrillation: How Much is Too Much?

International guidelines categorise atrial fibrillation (AF) largely upon duration: paroxysmal (PAF; intermittent episodes lasting12 months) or permanent (where patient and clinician agree to discontinue the pursuit of rhythm control and accept continuous AF)(1). Whilst catheter ablation (CA) of AF is an established, guideline-recommended approach to rhythm control(1), it is recognised that outcomes are worse for those with PeAF or LSPeAF, as compared with PAF(2).
