Transvaginal ultrasound: a reliable tool for detection and preoperative mapping of pelvic endometriosis

Traditionally, the evaluation of pelvic endometriosis has been reliant on visualization of the disease using laparoscopy, with or without histopathologic confirmation. However, in the last decade, rapid technological and interpreter expertise has catapulted imaging tools to the forefront for noninvasive detection and assessment of the anatomic extent of endometriosis. Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) of the pelvis and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a dedicated endometriosis protocol are two such imaging tools that have been used widely, with increased accuracy when performed or interpreted by experienced female pelvic imagers (1).
