Increase in CD8+ effector memory T cells re-expressing CD45RA correlates with intractability of severe alopecia areata

Rapidly progressive alopecia areata (RP-AA) is characterized by sudden and excessive dystrophic anagen hair loss typically involving entire scalp (Fukuyama et al., 2022). To directly suppress perifollicular autoreactive cytotoxic CD8+ T cell infiltration, intravenous corticosteroid pulse therapy (IV-PT) has been preferentially performed for acute phase RP-AA (Fukuyama et al., 2022, Kinoshita-Ise et al., 2023). Treatment responses to IV-PT are variable and requires around half a year to be adequately assessed (Sato et al., 2021).
