Value of HAVOC and Brown ESUS-AF scores for atrial fibrillation on implantable cardiac monitors after embolic stroke of undetermined source

Cryptogenic strokes represent about one-third of all ischemic stroke cases.1 Up to one in five of ischemic strokes are associated with atrial fibrillation (AF),2 either already known, or detected at hospital admission or during subsequent electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring (recent concept of AFDAS (Atrial Fibrillation Dectected After Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack).4 Because systematical anticoagulation in patients with cryptogenic stroke has shown no clinical benefit, identifying underlying AF has currently important therapeutic implications.
