Mesenteric ischaemia

Mesenteric ischaemia results from a blood flow that is inadequate to meet the metabolic demands of the small bowel. Both acute and chronic mesenteric ischaemia frequently represent a diagnostic challenge as symptoms can be non-specific. The former is typically characterized by acute-onset severe abdominal pain and the latter by reproducible post-prandial abdominal pain. Prompt diagnosis and intervention are central to improving outcomes as these disorders are associated with significant morbidity and mortality.
