Secular Trends in the Incidence and Severity of Injuries Sustained by Riders of Electric Bikes and Powered Scooters: The Experience of a Level 1 Adult Trauma Center

Electric bicycles (E-bikes) and powered scooters (P-scooters) are novel, rapid, environmentally friendly, and convenient modes of transportation [1]. There continues to be a worldwide increase in the popularity of E-bikes and P-scooters, with 31  million units sold in 2012 rising to 47.6 million in 2018 in United States alone [2]. This trend has been accompanied by a parallel increase in the number and severity of injuries associated with their use [2–4], involving riders, other road users, and pedestrians [5].
