The response of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production to inulin supplementation is reduced in very old adults compared to younger age groups

Rationale: Beneficial SCFA are produced by intestinal microbial fiber fermentation. We observed lower SCFA production in older adults but it remains unclear if fiber supplementation increases production in the aging population.
