Overfeeding in critical illness: effect on minute volume and PaCO2

Rationale: It has been described that overfeeding was associated with increased CO2 production and as a consequence, increased PaCO2 and minute volume (MV). However, the day-by-day effect of energy amount administered on MV and PaCO2 has been poorly studied. We evaluated different levels of energy administration and their consequences on MV and PaCo2 in a large ICU population.
