Clinical Pathology Correlation Case 1: Multiple painful lesions of the tongue

A 33 year-old black male presented to the oral pathologist with a two month history of painful lesions on the right side of the tongue. The patient had no significant medical history, and he reported occasional marijuana use. Clinical evaluation revealed several firm white patches on the right lateral and ventral tongue that were extremely tender both to palpation and at rest (Figure 1). The remainder of the oral mucosa was within normal limits, and the patient reported no other lesions.
