Editorial Comment

The residency match process is one of the most critical tasks that a department undertakes annually as those selected will represent the future of the field. As the number of applicants increases year after year, a holistic and unbiased review of every application becomes difficult. Furthermore, grades are now indistinguishable with the adoption of the pass/fail format. The letter of recommendation (LOR) has long served as the most important factor considered by program directors. However, there are shortcomings to this narrative piece, including gender bias.
